A CNA, or Certified Nursing Assistant, ( state tested nurse assistant ) is a healthcare professional who provides basic care and assists patients with daily tasks:
Duties
CNAs help patients with bathing, dressing, eating, using the toilet, and walking. They also take vital signs, record observations, and clean patient rooms.
Work environment
CNAs work in hospitals, nursing homes, and home health care services, and are often the main caregiver for their patients. They work under the supervision of a licensed nurse, like a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN).
Education and certification
Requirements for becoming a CNA vary by state, but often include completing an approved education program and passing a competency exam. CNAs must be on a state registry to work in a nursing home.
Other names
CNAs are also known as nursing assistants, patient care assistants (PCAs), or nurse's aides.
Career progression
Working as a CNA can be a good way to gain experience in the healthcare field and progress to other roles.
